Press Conference 1/23/07 On a bright January morning in 2007, NBC, KFWB, and hordes of reporters, TV cameramen and photographers descended on the Angel Flight® Railway's lower station -- the iconic Arch on Hill Street -- to hear what the President of Angels Flight® Railway Foundation would have to say. Olivet and Sinai -- the world famous twin funicular rail cars -- were conspicuous by their absence, being then stored at the MTA Red Line rail yards in the "Arts District" portion of Downtown Los Angeles. The Arch was being painted a bright orange by paint crews. It was my [...]

The 111th Anniversary Penny Party!

2021-03-26T12:03:46+00:00

The 111th Anniversary Penny Party! To commemorate the 111th Anniversary of entrepreneur and ex-Civil War colonel J.W. Eddy's opening the Angels Flight Railway on December 31, 1901 (when he charged just one cent per ride), the last day of 2012 -- December 31, 2012 -- saw the price of a one way ride once again reduced to ONE PENNY. Here are a few snapshots taken by Angels Flight fan Eric Reese (photo-editing by Angels Flight photographer Leonard Auslender). On December 31st, Eric also beat his previous record of taking fifty Angels Flight one-way trips in a single day. This time, he [...]

The Mayor Comes to Angels Flight

2021-03-26T12:04:03+00:00

The Mayor Comes to Angels Flight It was the Holiday Season, and a cold and rainy day. Nevertheless, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Jerry West visited the Angels Flight Railway and boarded Sinai while discussing the business and charity benefits of the then-upcoming Northern Trust Open, February 14 to 20, 2011, at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades. Angels Flight was one of about a dozen city landmarks featured in the program. 2021-03-26T13:31:27+00:00

Angels Flight, "The Shortest Railway in the World" -- completed 109 years of existence! On December 31st, 1901 Olivet and Sinai took their maiden voyages up and down Bunker Hill. To celebrate, passengers riding the cars on December 31st, 2010 rode at the original 1901 fare rate: one penny! Evacuation Drill

2021-03-26T12:03:11+00:00

Evacuation Drill Each year, and sometimes twice a year, Angels Flight conducts evacuation drills in conjunction with our wonderful Los Angeles Fire Department. This year, Companies 3, 4, and 10, under the supervision of Chief David Yamahata, conducted the drill. Passengers to be "rescued" came from members of the Angels Flight Board of Directors and music students from the Coburn School. The drill was a tremendous success. Olivet and Sinai were stopped on the trackbed at the least accessible point, and that's where the drill was conducted. All passengers were safely and efficiently "rescued" within 35 minutes! A big THANK [...]

Angels Flight Restoration Project 2007-2010

2021-03-26T12:02:46+00:00

Angels Flight Restoration Project 2007-2010 Following the resolution of all issues from an accident in 2001, the entire Angels Flight® Railway Drive and Control System from that time was removed. A completely new system was designed, manufactured, shipped, and installed. The extraordinary photojournalism of LEONARD AUSLENDER during this three-year period documents in great detail what was involved in: assembling this new, custom-designed and -built equipment; returning Olivet and Sinai to their tracks; and getting the Angels Flight® Railway back into safe and daily public service. From the January 23, 2007, Press Conference on Hill Street with George Takei joining in [...]
