ACROSS THE FINISH LINE: OPENING DAY!
Today, if vindication or “redemption” was needed, it was given! All the countless thousands upon thousands of hours of sung and unsung effort behind the scenes finally paid off. President Welborne had led his teams of experts — Bragg Crane, Murray Latta, TIG/m, Dave Charlebois’ team of finish carpenters, R & R Electric, Integrated Mechanical Systems and all the others — to this triumphant day. The press was there of course, and more important: the families whose members had included the private owners of Angels Flight through the years were there to be represented, and to savor the sweetness of the day, made all the more sweet by the difficulties and challenges — yes, and even by the lack of faith coming from a few quarters here and there.
The day started in the dark, as unobtrusive security personnel met at the Station House to discuss their tasks. Then, a few lights came on in the Station House. Bill, the day’s train operator, readied tickets and cash, and turned on the controls that brought Olivet and Sinai to life. The lights on the Arch, the hoops over the tracks, and the Station House all came on like gigantic holiday tree lights. And the television lights from news crews from all the local networks lit up the Arch and splashed on the sidewalk in front of and around it. Then the sun rose over the buildings and lit up the bright orange pennants flying over the Station House like fire, a site that hadn’t been seen in years. Angels Flight was open for business!
