WORK BEGINS ON OLIVET & SINAI, 9/25/07

Through the generosity of Metro (LACMTA), the cars, Olivet and Sinai, were stored Downtown, inside one of the huge buildings where the Red Line subway trains dwell. This is Metro’s Division 20 Maintenance Facility, on Santa Fe Avenue, in the Arts District. Olivet and Sinai were moved there in 2004, after the two cars were evicted from the early 20th Century brick warehouse on Sixth Street where the cars had been repaired and restored after the 2001 accident. Metro was a generous landlord for the cars from 2004 to 2008. A couple of years after the cars had been settled inside Metro’s shop, Metro decided to move the cars from inside to outside in the train yard, where the cars remained mothballed in blue tarps. Unfortunately, the cars were damaged in Metro’s short move, and Olivet and Sinai ended up needing further carpentry repair. Finally, that time came in 2007: It was time to remove the tarps and start to work on the cars in earnest.

On this day, David Charlebois and his team of finish carpenters showed up to make evaluations on just how the cars were going to be repaired. At the same time, the men from Bragg Crane and Rigging showed up to start unpacking some of the new parts that were to be installed on the undersides of the cars.
